Purpose of the Role:

Water Treatment Plant Operator ensures that water treatment plant produces reliable safe drinking water that meets all regulations (operating manuals/procedures) and Water Works standards.

Key Tasks:

Responsible for day to day operation and control of Water Treatment Works at the Centre
Perform work functions that ensure compliance to established WASCO policies and procedures
Provide for the safe and efficient operation of plant and pump stations equipment and treatment processes
Responsible for reliable production and supply of high quality water for all residential, commercial and industrial customers, (standards)
Monitor, record and reporting
Implement best practices in labour, health, safety and operational standards

GENERAL

Conduct handover with previous shift operator.
Monitor status of plant and pump stations operating parameters, such as flow, pressures, chemical feeds, levels and quality indicators by reference to measuring systems, investigate variances, and make adjustments accordingly.
Respond promptly and appropriately to environmental, electrical or mechanical emergencies to maintain compliance with policies & procedures.
Communicate effectively, and report any abnormal incidents or accidents as they happen and report on defective equipment.
Participate in and support all Health and Safety programs and initiatives such as inspections, meetings, hazard assessment, incident tracking.
Perform preventive maintenance; lubrication, operating adjustments, cleaning equipment.
Collect representative treatment process samples, perform quality tests of turbidity, pH, chlorine residual and other tests as required and take appropriate action based on results.
Respond promptly and appropriately to any electrical or mechanical emergencies in order to maintain compliance.
Perform first line operational and maintenance inspection and testing of system assets, such as standby pumps, chemical feeder, auxiliary equipment (compressor).
Perform preventive maintenance, including lubrication, operating adjustments, cleaning.
Maintain plant records, including logs, daily diaries, chemical inventories. Record and document all data to ensure compliance.
Identify needs; repair/spare parts and tools which informs budget
Receives work assignments, service priorities and other duties as assigned by Area Manager.
Produce quality water to meet demand while ensuring production losses below 10%, by avoiding unnecessary spillages.
Maintain good housekeeping practices.
Conduct daily visual and audible equipment checks.
Report on defective equipment.
Rotate duty and standby equipment to ensure balanced running hours on equipment.
Check stock levels of raw lime, polymers and other chemicals.
Make up chemicals to ensure adequate supply for the shift.
Monitor equipment running parameters and log on an hourly basis.
Conduct checks on chemical dosing equipment.
Conduct backwash sequence based on running hours of the filters.
Conduct desludge sequence based on running hours of the filters.
Ensures adequate pumps are available to run for the required plant inflow.
Monitor the storage capacity.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience

Diploma in Engineering Discipline; Civil, Water or Mechanical
Minimum of 2 years relevant experience
