Public Eye Newspapers is looking for an INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER to join our award winning team. We need a hard-hitting, multi-media journalist with insatiable curiosity, the ability to seek answers to tough questions, and the desire to dig deep. You must be able to present complex stories in a compelling fashion on air, in print and online. The most important job of the journalist is to seek the truth. As Pulitzer Prize winner Walter Lippmann once said, “There can be no higher law in journalism than to tell the truth and shame the devil.”
Investigative journalism is the process of researching and telling a story, usually one that someone else is trying to hide. As writers who investigate and report information with the purpose of facilitating change, investigative reporters are behind many of the reforms that we see today. The Internet has led to an easy flow of knowledge, and the successful investigative journalist must know how to use the media to take advantage of the knowledge and well-documented resources that are widely available.
Good investigative and research skills, determination, and a keen sense of scepticism are the important qualities to have. Courses in investigative reporting, journalism and the law, writing, ethics, and research techniques can help to hone these critical skills.
Role
The role of an investigative reporter involves thoroughly, accurately and properly researching all information. Typical day-to-day tasks include sifting through records and documents, turning complex subject matter into easy-to-understand copy, discussing stories with editors and interviewing people connected with a story.
Collect and analyse facts about newsworthy events by interview, investigation, or observation.
Report and write stories for the newspaper
Research a story’s background information to provide complete and accurate information
Investigate breaking news developments such as disasters, crimes, or human-interest stories.
Review and evaluate notes taken about news events to isolate pertinent facts and details.
Develop ideas or material for columns or commentaries by analysing and interpreting news, current issues, or personal experiences.
Determine a published or broadcast story’s emphasis, length, and format and organise material accordingly.
The successful candidate will be a team player who brings actionable, enterprise story ideas to the table every week. Attention to detail, the ability to build and keep contacts and to follow up are musts. If you are always ordering new business cards because you hand out 20 a day; if you are the go-to reporter when everyone else is worried about ruffling feathers; if you thrive on leading the newscast with a story no one else has – you’re the reporter we want.
Skills
Solid interviewer, analytical and open-minded.
Good communication skills
English, Maths and Sesotho
Negotiations skills
Qualifications
Preferably a bachelor’s degree in journalism, media or social science, but with additional journalism qualifications or training.
Experience
At least five years’ experience on the same beat.
