Public Eye Newspapers is an 18-year-old, reputable and established private media company, whose publications reach all corners of Lesotho and South Africa. Public Eye Newspapers places emphasis on the importance of its respectable and reliable brand, which took years of hard work to build. As a result, the company seeks to engage a NEWS EDITOR to lead its vibrant team of journalists.
The incumbent is expected to plan, coordinate, and revise material for publication of newspapers. He/she will be expected to review story ideas and decide what material will appeal most to readers and offer comments to improve the product, and suggest titles and headlines. Most importantly, s/he must have thorough knowledge of defamation laws and enough knowledge of laws that affect the media in Lesotho and South Africa. S/he must be well read and well informed about national, regional and global news events.
Duties
1) Manage and direct reporters’ diaries, giving shape to ideas and acting as the company’s think-tank.
2) Write analyses and editorial comments
3) Plan the content of publications according to the publications’ style and editorial policy.
4) Develop story or content ideas, considering reader or audience appeal.
5) Prepare, rewrite and edit copy to improve readability, or supervise others who do this work.
6) Read copy or proof to detect and correct errors in spelling, punctuation and syntax.
7) Assist the editor and sub editors to allocate print space for story text, photos, and illustrations according to space parameters and copy significance.
8) Verify facts, dates, and statistics.
9) Check all stories for possibility of libel
10) Assign topics, events and stories to individual writers or reporters for coverage.
11) Read, evaluate and edit copy submitted for publication and confer with authors regarding changes in content, style or organisation prior to publication.
12) Monitor newsgathering operations to ensure utilisation of all news sources such as press releases and reports.
13) Meet frequently with artists, typesetters, layout personnel, marketing officers, and production managers to discuss projects and resolve problems.
14) Supervise and coordinate work of reporters and photojournalists.
15) Co-ordinate the training of cub reporters
16) Select local, national, and international news items received from wire services, based on assessment of items’ significance and interest value.
17) Interview and hire writers and reporters or negotiate contracts, royalties, and payments for authors or freelancers.
18) Direct and be custodian of the company’s editorial policies.
19) Arrange for copyright permissions.
Education and Training
Proficiency with computers and a bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, or English are typically required for the role of news editor.
Experience
She or he must have at least 10 years’ experience of journalism practice in newspapers
IMPORTANT QUALITIES
Reliability. Ability to deliver reliably even without supervision.
Creativity. The news editor must be creative, curious, and knowledgeable on a broad range of topics. News editor must regularly come up with interesting and attention-grabbing story ideas.
Detail oriented. One of the news editor’s main tasks is to make sure that material is error-free and matches the style of a publication.
Good judgment. The news editor must decide if certain stories are ethical or if there is enough evidence to report them.
Interpersonal skills. In working with writers, s/he must have tact and the ability to guide and encourage them in their work.
Language skills. S/he must ensure that all written content has correct grammar, punctuation, and syntax.
As a result, strong language skills are essential for this post.
