UNDP in Lesotho is contracting LOCAL SECURITY ASSISTANT (LSA)

The position is locally administered by UNDP but it financed centrally by the United Nations Department of Safety & Security (UNDSS). This is a standalone security officer’s post, based in Maseru but with the flexibility to move to any other city in the country in accordance to the dictates of the security situation as determined by the CSA and the DO. Under the guidance and supervision of the Chief Security Advisor (CSA), Deputy Security Advisor or Field Security Co-ordination Officer, the LSA assists in the implementation of security operations and all matters relating to the management of safety and security for UN personnel and their dependants in the country.
Summary of key functions:
Assist CSA/DSA/FSCO in Collecting, updating and communicating information regarding the security situation in the country.
Update and maintain the Country Security Plan, including updating staff lists and office locations.
Under the guidance of the CSA/DSA will update and implement the Minimum Operational Security Standards (MOSS) for the duty station and will be responsible for the safety of the UN House and other UN offices in Maseru and outside.
Assist the CSA/DSA to prepare the Country Security Risk Assessment (SRA) and give inputs.
LSA will attend to the important security incidents with the UN staff/dependants, prepare report on the incidents affecting UN staff, dependants, offices and assets and inform the police.
Conduct security briefings for the new staff, UN visitors and UN conferences/workshops.
Organise and deliver training courses on security awareness and preparedness.
Conduct the residential surveys (Minimum Operating Residential Security Standards – MORSS) for UN staff.
Supervise and train the private security guard force that is deployed at the UN premises and UN staffs’ residences.
Provide general administrative assistance to the CSA/ DSA/FSCO.

VI. Recruitment Qualifications
Education: Secondary education, University degree desirable, but it is not a requirement.
Experience: * 5-7 years’ experience in security, preferably in the military or police context or related field of work Prior experience with the UN system or an international NGO is desirable. *Knowledge of HF and VHF radio operation. *Experience in diplomatic security, protection and intelligence considered an asset. Knowledge of the host country safety codes. * Solid computer skills (MS Word, Excel, Access & PowerPoint. * A valid drivers’ licence, with efficiency to drive on mountainous routes in Lesotho. * Ability to travel. * Physically fit.
