Based out of our office in Pretoria, South Africa, and focusing on programs in Malawi and Ethiopia, Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) has an important and impactful job opportunity for an experienced Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) program management professional to support its Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) regional office and national organizations. We are seeking someone who has experience managing WASH solutions and programs in a residential and low-income housing context.
As a WASH Program Specialist, you would be a key part of our efforts to help end poverty housing.
Under the overall guidance of the Associate Director of Program Operations, the WASH Program Specialist is accountable for the evaluation of the existing WASH projects at Habitat for Humanity organizations in Ethiopia and Malawi as well as the development, design and planning of new WASH programs. These would include innovative and sustainable approaches for water supply and sanitation as well as linkages to the overall strategy for each country.
LOCATION:Pretoria, South Africa.
DURATION OF POSITION:1 year.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct major evaluation exercises and reviews of existing WASH programs.
  • Provide technical advice and support to Habitat for Humanity Malawi and Habitat for Humanity Ethiopia and WASH teams.
  • Plan and organize capacity building programs for community water management, water quality surveillance and response planning, sanitation and hygiene promotion.
  • Provide technical expertise as required, facilitates learning exchanges and help position for policy influencing.
  • Ensure critical gaps in information, knowledge and understanding relating to water supply, water safety, water resource management and sanitation and hygiene promotion are recognized and addressed.
  • Together with the Habitat for Humanity Malawi and Habitat for Humanity Ethiopia teams, develop a strategic, well-focused WASH program in each country.
  • Ensure program efficiency and delivery in particular referring to cost effective and innovative solutions to accelerate trend of access with analysis of potential and sector environment.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • University degree in water and sanitation related fields such as civil engineering or public health, with specialization in environmental sanitation, hygiene education, water supply or hydrogeology or other fields related to the work of Habitat for Humanity.
  • 5+ years of professional water and sanitation experience in the context of residential WASH solutions at a national/international level.
  • Work experience managing WASH programmes and solutions in a non-profit or non-governmental development organization (such as the UN or other international development organization).
  • Experience managing innovative and cost effective solutions for water supply and sanitation, as well as sustainability analysis, climate change mitigation and adaptation measures.
  • Experience designing and conducting WASH trainings referring to sanitation and water for all and decentralization of service delivery.
  • Fluency in English.
  • 30% travel within the EMEA region.
  • Local candidates will be given first priority for this position.

PREFERRED:

  • Master's degree in water and sanitation related fields.
  • Knowledge of the local working language in Ethiopia and/or Malawi.
  • Additional training/experience in public health.
  • Previous experience in Ethiopia and/or Malawi.*
