NOTICE OF VACANCY: POST OF ACCOUNTANT Effective 01 May 2016
Morija Museum & Archives (MMA) is a leading cultural and heritage institution in Lesotho, operating under the Lesotho Evangelical Church with support from the Government of Lesotho and a wide range of partners. MMA seeks to promote the collection, preservation, presentation and interpretation of documents and artefacts that are vital to a fuller understanding of the history, culture and environment of Lesotho/the Basotho and their place in the wider world. Through a number of programmes and projects, and its allied components (Morija Arts Centre, Maeder House Gallery, The Hub), Morija Museum promotes the presentation and enhancement of the arts and living culture, research and publishing, educational outreach, heritage management and tourism development.
Morija Museum requires a full-time qualified Accountant to carry out the following:
1. Oversee / strengthen financial management systems in close collaboration with the Curator: Professionally manage various MMA accounts (using Pastel), supervise the staff member responsible for Petty Cash, produce regular financial reports for the Curator, Board and funding partners, prepare for the annual audit, develop budgets, and ensure that financial procedures / policies are adhered to.
To be successful in this core responsibility, the candidate must be a person of integrity and high standards, a self-starter, well-organised, attentive to detail as well as the larger picture, able to define boundaries, and willing to work odd hours in order to fulfil deadlines. Professional qualifications are essential. Previous experience as an accountant will be a definite advantage.
In addition, depending upon background and aptitude, the candidate may be asked to assist with:
2. The development of more viable Business and Marketing Plans so as to ensure the growth and sus-tainability of Morija Museum, including cost-cutting measures and enhanced revenue-generation; or
3. Human Resources Management; or
4. Development and implementation of Project Proposals, including liaising with current and potential funding partners, writing reports and evaluation/monitoring; or
5. Enhancement of Morija’s position as a key centre for tourists and visitors by strengthening services and products at the Museum, and by working closely with its partners and the wider community.
Those aspiring for appointment to this position should be capable of carrying out multiple assign-ments, willing to learn, a team player, and one who promotes a positive culture of customer service and product development. In addition to good accounting skills, such a person should demonstrate knowledge of governance issues, above average communication and writing skills, a good understanding of word-processing, spread-sheets, and Pastel. A valid driver’s license will be an added advantage. Salary is based upon Government scales and includes a contributory pension plan and death benefits insurance.
