Letšeng Diamonds held a successful ceremony to officially award scholarships to 10 Basotho to pursue studies, which upon return, will contribute to the growth of the mining industry and to the development of Lesotho’s natural resources.
Since the scholarship inception in 2006, a total of 41 scholarships have been awarded to 39 young Basotho. Of these, 29 have graduated, 16 have been employed full time by Letšeng, 3 are on internship and 10 are continuing with their studies.Letšeng Diamonds (Pty) Ltd has made a commitment to provide scholarships to deserving Basotho as provided for in Section 9 (i) of the Mining Agreement. The Agreement states that the Letšeng Diamonds shall establish an educational trust for payment of scholarships and fellowships to Lesotho nationals selected by the Company. The Agreement states further that support shall be to students studying in fields that are relevant to the development of Lesotho’s natural resources. The educational scholarships, which form part of the Corporate Social Responsibility and Investment Programme of the company, are therefore aimed at fostering social and economic development that will sustain communities well beyond the life of the mine. |
