Policy Officer - Southern Africa region


Based: Tearfund is interested in receiving applications from the following locations: Zambia, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, South Africa, dependent on candidate’s home
Applicants must have the right to live and work in either Tearfund sponsorship
Contract Duration: This is a Maternity cover from 1st June 2016 up to 12 months.
Salary: Market matched depending on location of successful candidate
Tearfund’s work in East and Southern Africa involves a range of projects with local partners and our own operational teams. Our work in each country contextualises our corporate outcomes:
  1. Envisioning Churches to address poverty and injustice;
  2. Supporting local churches and communities to reduce poverty and build resilience;
  3. Advocating to change unjust policies and practices to deliver justice for poor communities;
  4. Responding to disasters and equipping communities to better face future hazards.
We are looking for a Policy Officer to join our East and Southern Africa Team (ESA). You will be working closely with the relevant ESA Team staff in the UK and internationally, and UK Advocacy staff. You will build the capacity of Tearfund partners and churches across the Southern Africa region to advocate on issues in their respective context as well as lead research and policy formulation on issues relating to the regional strategic concerns.
You will be qualified to degree level, with a good understanding of development issues and international relations, and ideally an understanding of the region and supporting partners. You will have experience of capacity building and have the ability to research and analyse information and design advocacy strategies. You will have good written English and communication skills, and be able to manage your own workload.
