Senior R&D Professional
The role
To execute and manage all engineering, technical and commercial issues on materials handling projects; and to coordinate the engineering functions within the mechanical engineering discipline during projects.
Key performance areas
Design Material Handling Facilities
  • Participate in the initial design of the material handling facility with Drawing Office and Support Engineering disciplines to ensure feasibility and practicality of the material handling facility
  • Review the layout of the material handling facility with the Drawing Office to ensure drawings produced are of good quality
  • Overview the client specs to identify parameters for the design
  • Interact with Support Engineering disciplines to obtain all the designs for incorporation into the design and interfaces
  • Finalise the mechanical design according to the approved lay-out drawings and specifications
  • Produce equipment schedules for purchasing and specifications for purchasing and submit to Procurement Department
  • Manage and control mechanical engineering costs in accordance with project budget and time frame
  • Obtain and approve certified vendor information and submit to Drawing Office
  • Review and check drawings to ensure they are adhering to client and project specifications; correct drawings where applicable and submit back to the Drawing Office; sign off on drawings
  • Participate in project kick off / handing over meetings to communicate and transfer the technical information and data
  • Conduct site visits to ensure the design of the materials handling facility correctly and sign off on the as- built drawings and compliance of designs
  • Attend project review meetings to feedback, determine progress and resolve problems
  • Design materials handling facilities in compliance with the SMS Safety Management Program
  • Adhere to all safety regulations e.g. Mine Health and Safety Act and SMS HSE Policy
  • Identify and manage project risks
  • Coordinate audit of designs
Participate in Tenders
  • Determine conceptual design of materials handling facilities
  • Take off mechanical quantities to dictate the costs from initial / preliminary drawings received from the client or from the Drawing Office
  • Estimate hours for mechanical design
  • Estimate man power required for mechanical design
  • Liaise with the Estimating Department during participation in Tender Projects
  • Compile technical write up of the design offered
Support Procurement
  • Assist the Procurement Department to select suitable contractors for the supply of equipment and fabrication of steelwork
  • Evaluate potential suppliers to ensure they have the resources and capability to execute the work on offer
  • Assist the Procurement Department with the technical adjudication of tenders and with the technical content of the enquiry documents or orders
Supervisory of Subordinates and Support to Drawing Office
  • Provide support to the Drawing Office by overseeing and signing off of drawings, and providing guidance in designing materials handling facilities to maintain an optimised and fit for purpose product
  • Allocate workload to subordinates within the Department
  • Ensure that engineering systems and procedures and sound engineering practicesare strictly adhered to
  • Mentor and coach subordinates in the basic concepts of the application, design, detail, construction, erection and commissioning of bulk material handling equipment
  • Participate in the recruitment of Engineers and Junior Engineers
  • Participate with the Engineering Manager to conduct bi-annual performance reviews of subordinates
  • Address areas of non-performance
  • Identify training and development initiatives for subordinates in conjunction with the Engineering Manager
  • Motivate staff members and maintain a team-work environment within the Department
Manage Relationships
  • Maintain relationships with customers and suppliers concerning technical matters i.e. conduct presentations and ensure the best solution is provided to the client
  • Liaise directly with clients during audits
  • Attend technical meetings with clients
  • Maintain relationships with departments within the organisation in the provision of input of technical advice
Produce Reports
  • Produce reports following site visits to report on progress of the design, technical issues, problems identified and changes to the design:
    • Collect the required data from all relevant sources
    • Verify the data to ensure that only applicable data is utilised
    • Collate the data and generate the report
    • Make recommendations in accordance with the information at hand
  • Submit the report to the Project Manager, Project Engineer and Engineering Manager
  • Distribute the report to the relevant role players and archive for future reference purposes
  • Compile the report in accordance with policies, procedures and legal requirements
  • Compile the report within the allocated time frame
Your profile
  • Minimum B Tech Mechanical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering Degree would be advantageous
  • Registered with ECSA
  • Minimum 8 to 10 years mechanical engineering experience within the materials handling environment
  • Exposure to project management would be advantage
