Background:
The Global Development Incubator (GDI) supports innovative organizations and initiatives that have the opportunity to create large-scale social change. GDI achieves its mission through two programs: an Initiative Incubator and a Social Enterprise Accelerator. The recently launched Social Enterprise Accelerator aims to double the scale, reach and impact of social enterprises. In partnership with the organization, the Accelerator brings together world-class service providers in an integrated two-year program of support to set the right strategy and build the organization's capacity. In the next five years, the Social Enterprise Accelerator aims to build a portfolio of 30 social enterprises, for prospective foundations and investors, ready to scale for large-scale social impact.
Since 2007, GDI has supported efforts such as the launch of the Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE) at the Aspen Institute and the Initiative for Smallholder Finance, among others. Position Description :
The Social Enterprise Accelerator Portfolio Manager role is a unique opportunity to work closely with social entrepreneurs who are addressing some of the world's biggest problems. You will be a strategist, advisor, integrator, connector and implementer – with the goal of doing whatever it takes to help build the capacity for your two portfolio social enterprises. You will be the nexus of the Social Enterprise Accelerator program – bringing together expertise and services from some of the world's leading experts on social entrepreneurship, advising the senior management team of the social enterprise, working closely with the GDI Social Enterprise Accelerator leadership team, and making sure all efforts are implemented for results. Working under the supervision of the Accelerator Director and together with a small team of Portfolio Managers around the world, you will have significant responsibility and a high degree of autonomy.
Responsibilities: Directly supporting your social enterprise portfolio:
  • Conducting diagnostics and developing a roadmap to scale for prospective social enterprises
  • Managing the overall Acceleration program against milestones, budget and target outcomes
  • Integrating services provided by consultants and experts and ensuring implementation
  • Providing ongoing advisory and strategy support to the senior leadership team
  • Supporting outreach, network-building and fundraising efforts
  • Travelling as needed to support field implementation or headquarters advisory
Supporting the work and team of the Accelerator:
  • Briefing Accelerator leadership on a weekly basis as to progress, risks and issues
  • Participating in quarterly portfolio reviews with the Accelerator leadership team, social enterprise management team and advisors
  • Refining the diagnostic and acceleration methodologies based on your hands-on experiences
  • Supporting broader knowledge management and dissemination, including authoring articles, blogs and other publications
Desired qualifications:
We are looking for experienced candidates with a mix of entrepreneurial, strategy and operational experiences, including
  • Masters degree in business or related field
  • Minimum 5 years of work experience in management consulting, finance, and / or social impact organizations
  • Direct experience with management and operations, and a successful record of implementation
  • Entrepreneurial mindset and experiences, with either a business or social enterprise
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to get things done
  • Ability to work collaboratively, build trust and facilitate change in organizations
  • Commitment and passion for social change
