The Lesotho Water And Sewerage Company (WASCO) invites applications from suitably qualified local candidates for the following position:
Job Title: Occupational Health and Safety Inspector
Reports to: Head Human Resource
Purpose of the Role:
To coordinate health and safety systems and activities in the Company as well as to identify hazards, assess risks to health and safety and put appropriate safety controls in place
Key Tasks:
1. Participate in the development and review of the HR Regulations, Health and Safety Policy and HIV and
AIDS Policy.
2. Develop health and safety systems, procedures and manuals.
3. Ensure implementation and monitoring of the H&S Policy, programme, systems and procedures on a daily basis.
4. Promote occupational health and safety within the Company and develop safer and healthier ways of working.
5. Inspect workplaces and workplace equipment to ensure they meet safety regulations and identify hazards and risks.
6. Ensure that workplaces conform with Company procedures and safety standards.
7. Work with Engineers and other professionals to ensure safety of worksites and work practices.
8. Ensure that dangerous materials are correctly stored and handled properly.
9. Identify and test work areas for potential accident and health hazards such as toxic fumes and explosive gas-air mixtures and implement appropriate control measures.
10. Record and report hazards, accidents, injuries and health issues within the workplace.
11. Assist with the investigation of accidents and unsafe working conditions, study possible causes and recommend remedial action.
12. Ensure the development of an Emergency Preparedness Plan and a Contingency Plan in the event of fi re, flood or any other natural disasters and communicate them to staff.
13. Regularly liaise with the Health and Safety Committee and the Health and Safety Representatives in line with the Policy.
14. Conduct training sessions for management and staff on health and safety practices and legislation and demonstrate the use of safety equipment.
15. Assist with the rehabilitation of workers after accidents or injuries and make sure they experience a satisfactory return to work.
16. Communicate frequently with management to report on the status of occupational health and safety
programme.
17. Coach team through setting performance targets, giving feedback and addressing limitations in performance and supporting staff to improve performance.
18. Supervise day to day work of the supervisee to ensure that agreed standards and service levels are maintained.
19. Prepare monthly and quarterly reports on activities undertaken for management information and action.
Qualifi cations & Experience
• Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health and Safety/
Environmental Health/Engineering/Construction/
Science or related field
• Three years relevant technical work experience
• Registration with Labour Department highly recommended
• Knowledge of the Labour Code, DDPR Procedures and
HR Regulations
