The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS, www.nexteinstein.org) is a pan-African network of centres of excellence for postgraduate training, research and outreach in mathematical sciences. Its mission is to enable Africa's brightest students to flourish as independent thinkers, problem solvers and innovators capable of propelling Africa's future scientific, educational and economic self-sufficiency. The first AIMS centre opened in Cape Town, South Africa in 2003; since 2011, AIMS has opened additional centres in Senegal, Ghana and Cameroon, with a fifth centre scheduled to open in Tanzania in 2014. The goal of the AIMS Next Einstein Initiative (AIMS-NEI) is to build a Pan African network of 15 centres of excellence across the continent by 2023.

Director, Communications
As a career communications practitioner, you have created, planned for and implemented an effective communications strategy to build profile and strengthen brand awareness. You bring a progressive approach that skilfully leverages a variety of traditional and non-traditional communications mediums to actively engage sought after stakeholders. You are a diplomatic collaborator with the ability to champion and influence change among a diverse group of professionals both internal and external to the organization.
Reporting to and working closely with the Executive Director, this start up role will be demanding of your creative capabilities, superb writing skills and your seasoned media relations experience as you craft and establish a suite of marketing and promotional resources to inform and attract the desired audiences to the work of AIMS. As well, you will be relied on as a source of expert guidance and counsel ensuring a cohesive and unified voice is achieved across our global network.
This is a full time, 3-year contract opportunity and is flexible to be based from our office in Cape Town, South Africa or from your fully functional home office.
Do you have what we need?
· You have achieved a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (preferred) incommunications, journalism, public relations or related field required along with 10+ years of relevant experience at a management level
· You are an articulate communicator (written, verbal and visual) with exceptional English language skills; French language skills, a desired advantage
· You are flexible to adapt to a dynamic, evolving environment alongside a growing team of uniquely diverse professionals
· You are self-sufficient with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and savvy with web-based applications (Dropbox, Google, Skype, Social Media)
· You are familiar with the political, social, economic and cultural context of working in Africa
· You are able and willing to travel within and out of Africa, for periodic extended in-country stays of up to 8 weeks
· A genuine interest in Education
