Volunteer, MDR-TB Analytics, Maseru, Lesotho

Overview:
The Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) works to broaden access to life-saving therapy for HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis (TB) and malaria patients in the poorest parts of the world. CHAI approaches health access challenges with simultaneous and intensive engagement on both the demand and supply sides of the market. Based on the premise that business oriented strategy can facilitate solutions to global health challenges, CHAI acts as a catalyst to mobilize new resources and optimize the impact of these resources to save lives, via improved organization of commodity markets and more effective national and sub-national level management.

Lesotho suffers from the third-highest rate of HIV infection in the world—almost one-quarter of the adult population is estimated to be HIV-positive. Lesotho has the fifth highest incidence of TB in the world. While the Lesotho National Tuberculosis Program (NTP) has taken significant steps to counter TB, anti-tuberculosis drug resistance has become a major public health problem known as Multi Drug Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR-TB).

The CHAI TB/MDR-TB program in Lesotho focuses on addressing both the supply-side and demand-side barriers to ensure access to drugs and diagnostics. The TB/MDR-TB program works closely with the NTP to provide technical assistance, as well as with partners and manufacturers to address challenges arising with scale up and uptake of drugs and diagnostics.

The CHAI TB/MDR-TB program in Lesotho in conjunction with CHAI’s Applied Analytics Team (AAT) is launching an MDR-TB Pathways Study. The goal of the study is to understand the movement of patients from identification as MDR TB suspects through testing, diagnosis, treatment initiation, and treatment completion. Mapping and quantifying the variety of pathways followed by patients will be invaluable in assisting the NTP and partners in developing and implementing interventions to ensure more MDR-TB patients are initiated on treatment.
