Research consultancy at Save the Children - 8/25/2015

Introduction
Save the Children International is the world's leading independent organization for Children. We strive for a world in which all children thrive in safe family environments, protected from violence, exploitation, abuse and neglect. As part of this ambition, we are currently driving a global learning agenda to collate evidence of how urbanisation affects children and how they can be better protected in urban contexts. The Southern Africa Regional Office is seeking to contribute to this learning by commissioning a participatory research study that will assist in the development of a package of cost-effective, scalable and evidence-based interventions that enhance the safety of children on the move during different stages of their journey in rural to urban migration.
Requirements:
  • Candidates affiliated with academic institutions are strongly encouraged to apply
  • Experience with research in migration and/or child protection, preferably in the Southern Africa region, in and beyond South Africa
  • Good knowledge of children’s rights approach to programming
  • Master’s degree in a relevant social discipline
  • Experience conducting research with children
  • Excellent report writing and research skills
Scope of activities
  • Conduct an in-depth desk review of previous interventions in preventing unsafe migration
  • Finalize research design that can be utilized by Save the Children staff in six cities in the region to conduct a series of 12 focus group discussions with children over the course of six weeks.
  • Analyse data and provide recommendations on promising interventions in terms of relevance, efficiency, effectiveness, feasibility, network/linkages and collaboration, sustainability and achievement of results

  • Planning meeting
  • Research design
  • Research instruments for use during children’s focus group discussions
  • Training session for youth workers/research assistants who will conduct focus group discussions in South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe (Save the Children will recruit and be responsible for research assistant related costs)
  • Detailed report, including suggested package of interventions

Candidates should consider that the budget will cover approximately 25 full consultant days over the period 10 September to 31 December 2014 for the development and completion of the above deliverables.
