BACKGROUND
The Peace Corps is an independent U.S. Government agency that sends American volunteers around the world to aid countries to fulfill their development needs. The three goals of the Peace Corps are:
To help the people of interested countries in meeting their needs for trained men and women;
To help promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of peoples served;
To help promote a better understanding of other people on the part of Americans.
The Peace Corps currently operates in 74 countries, with over 8,000 American volunteers of all ages and backgrounds.
Peace Corps originally opened its program in Lesotho in 1967. Peace Corps Volunteers are currently working in two sectors (Education and Community Health). We are seeking an enthusiastic individual who is a team player and self-starter with moral integrity to fill this vacancy.
BASIC FUNCTION
Under the supervision of the Director of Management and Operations (DMO), but with day to day coordination by the General Services Manager(GSM), the Driver/Mechanic supports Peace Corps Lesotho in all duties related to safe operation and preventative maintenance of the vehicle fleet, and performs mechanical services.
DRIVER
Operates a variety of vehicles for Peace Corps/Lesotho in accordance with Peace Corps policies and procedures; ensure compliance with policies and procedures by all passengers; provide transport to staff, Peace Corps Trainees (PCTs) and Volunteers (PCVs), and other authorized passengers throughout Lesotho; Conducts daily maintenance checks of vehicles (oil, fluids, tire pressure, service schedule, engine, tire condition, lights, body condition of vehicle, etc.); Ensures daily cleaning of vehicles (interior and exterior); Documents and reports vehicle malfunctions and/or accidents to the GSM; Maintains daily vehicle logs and filling reports, ensures waiver forms are stocked in vehicles; Ensures vehicles are in good condition and fully fueled daily; Available for after-hours assignments and serve as duty driver on rotating basis.
Picks up mail from Lesotho Post Office and/or US Embassy mailroom; Delivers and retrieves correspondence to/from partner organizations; Obtains and deliver supplies; Perform administrative tasks as requested, such as photocopying, data entry, etc
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge: Knowledge of local traffic regulations, locations of government and other offices and enterprises both in Maseru and in the field, as well as Mission residences in Maseru.
Must have clean driving record.
Education: High school or local equivalent is required. Valid driving license, C1 and Public Driving Permit are a must.
Prior Work Experience: Minimum of two (2) years experience working with International Organizations or two (2) years experience as a driver in commerce, or similar backgrounds. Experience working with Americans will be added advantage.
Language Proficiency: Speaking and writing in Sesotho and English is required.
Abilities and Skills; spirit of teamwork, flexibility, punctuality, ability to learn quickly, ability to travel long distance out of town.
