Organizational Setting

The objective of the Department of Nuclear Energy is to foster the efficient and safe use of nuclear power by supporting interested Member States in improving the performance of nuclear power plants, the nuclear fuel cycle, and the management of nuclear wastes; in catalysing innovation in nuclear power and fuel cycle technologies; in developing indigenous capabilities for national energy planning; in deploying new nuclear power plants; in preserving and disseminating nuclear information and knowledge; and in advancing science and industry through improved operation of research reactors.

The Nuclear Information Section consists of the IAEA Library Unit, the International Nuclear Information System (INIS) Unit and the Systems Development and Support Group. It fosters the exchange of scientific and technical information on the peaceful use of nuclear science and technology; increases awareness in Member States of the importance of maintaining efficient and effective systems for managing such information; provides information services and support to Member States and to the IAEA; and assists with capacity building and training.

Main purpose

Under the supervision of the INIS Unit Head, the Nuclear Information Specialist ensures high quality subject analysis and classification of the records entered into the INIS Collection. He/she is also responsible for the regular updating and maintenance of the INIS Thesaurus and other authorities/manuals.

Role

The Nuclear Information Specialist performs the role of (1) an analyst performing subject analysis of IAEA and other UN publications, as well as of the bibliographic records received from INIS Member States and scientific publishers in the subject area of technology, instrumentation, accelerators and reactor engineering, and other related areas; (2) an adviser to the INIS Unit Head on matters pertaining to the relevant nuclear subject areas, including maintaining and updating the INIS thesaurus and other authority files; (3) a team member working collaboratively on the maintenance and revision of INIS working procedures, guiding materials, and on the continuous improvement of subject analysis and indexing tools, and quality control techniques; and (4) an instructor teaching subject analysis and use of INIS products and services.

Partnerships

The Nuclear Information Specialist interacts with the INIS Unit Head on a regular basis regarding work plan, priorities, and handling of special issues. He/she interacts regularly with staff at the national INIS centres to provide assistance and advice on input preparation related to subject analysis, and works closely with other partners for maintaining and continuously enhancing the INIS Thesaurus.

Collaborates with other members of the Nuclear Information Section on identifying and developing common activities, products and services, with the goal of improving efficiency and synergy within the Section.

Functions / Key Results Expected

In the fields of nuclear physics, accelerators and nuclear reactor engineering, and related technical fields, the Nuclear Information Specialist will:
  • Perform subject analysis of the contents of publications of the IAEA and other UN organizations, and of electronic input received from scientific publishers and/or INIS Members;
  • Verify the quality of the subject analysis and abstracts received from Member States, correcting errors and/or re-index documents as required;
  • Propose actions for improving the quality of the INIS Collection and for increasing effectiveness of the subject analysis techniques and retrieval capabilities;
  • Analyse and assist in improving the comprehensiveness of coverage of the INIS Collection;
  • Update and maintain the English language version of the INIS Thesaurus in the relevant nuclear subject areas, and improve other INIS authorities/manuals;
  • Provide assistance, by using the INIS Collection, with information retrieval to IAEA staff members, Vienna-based United Nations organizations and other users; and
  • Prepare presentations and other documents for INIS meetings and training programmes in subject analysis and information retrieval.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of and ability to use computerized library and information systems and services, especially those using controlled vocabulary or thesauri.
  • Computer skills: Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office 2010 (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), which is the IAEA's standard.
  • Ability to carry out detail oriented and systematic work.
  • Accuracy in checking inputs and in performing subject analyses.
  • Very good presentation and communication skills.
  • Self-motivated teamwork player, efficient, and resourceful.
  • Interpersonal skills: Ability to establish effective working relationships with other staff and to work in a multicultural/multidisciplinary team with respect and sensitivity for diversity.
  • Willingness to keep abreast of new developments in the field of subject expertise and information processing.

Education, Experience and Language Skills

  • University degree in nuclear physics, nuclear reactor engineering or related field.
  • Minimum of five years of relevant working experience, with experience in library use of controlled vocabularies (thesaurus systems) for subject indexing.
  • Experience in a national INIS centre would be an advantage.
  • Language skills: Fluency in spoken and written English. Working knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) an asset.

Remuneration

The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $56 198 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $39 226*, dependency benefits, rental subsidyeducation grantrelocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks' annual vacation, home leave,pension plan and health insurance.
