Organizational Setting |
The objective of the Department of Nuclear Energy is to foster the efficient and safe use of nuclear power by supporting interested Member States in improving the performance of nuclear power plants, the nuclear fuel cycle, and the management of nuclear wastes; in catalysing innovation in nuclear power and fuel cycle technologies; in developing indigenous capabilities for national energy planning; in deploying new nuclear power plants; in preserving and disseminating nuclear information and knowledge; and in advancing science and industry through improved operation of research reactors. The Nuclear Information Section consists of the IAEA Library Unit, the International Nuclear Information System (INIS) Unit and the Systems Development and Support Group. It fosters the exchange of scientific and technical information on the peaceful use of nuclear science and technology; increases awareness in Member States of the importance of maintaining efficient and effective systems for managing such information; provides information services and support to Member States and to the IAEA; and assists with capacity building and training. |
Main purpose |
Under the supervision of the INIS Unit Head, the Nuclear Information Specialist ensures high quality subject analysis and classification of the records entered into the INIS Collection. He/she is also responsible for the regular updating and maintenance of the INIS Thesaurus and other authorities/manuals. |
Role |
The Nuclear Information Specialist performs the role of (1) an analyst performing subject analysis of IAEA and other UN publications, as well as of the bibliographic records received from INIS Member States and scientific publishers in the subject area of technology, instrumentation, accelerators and reactor engineering, and other related areas; (2) an adviser to the INIS Unit Head on matters pertaining to the relevant nuclear subject areas, including maintaining and updating the INIS thesaurus and other authority files; (3) a team member working collaboratively on the maintenance and revision of INIS working procedures, guiding materials, and on the continuous improvement of subject analysis and indexing tools, and quality control techniques; and (4) an instructor teaching subject analysis and use of INIS products and services. |
Partnerships |
The Nuclear Information Specialist interacts with the INIS Unit Head on a regular basis regarding work plan, priorities, and handling of special issues. He/she interacts regularly with staff at the national INIS centres to provide assistance and advice on input preparation related to subject analysis, and works closely with other partners for maintaining and continuously enhancing the INIS Thesaurus. Collaborates with other members of the Nuclear Information Section on identifying and developing common activities, products and services, with the goal of improving efficiency and synergy within the Section. |

Remuneration |
The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $56 198 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $39 226*, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks' annual vacation, home leave,pension plan and health insurance.
