GRM International is implementing a regional smallholder agricultural development project covering selected areas of Zimbabwe, Swaziland and Lesotho known as the Seed and Markets Project (SAMP). GRM has completed a first phase of the project (SAMP 1) and has now expanded in SAMP 2 that will run till end of 2015.
Key components of the project are commodity crop enterprise and seed crop production and it views appropriate postharvest knowledge and handling as a very crucial element of both seed and commodities preservation. In SAMP 2, GRM would like to strengthen the post-harvest knowledge and techniques used by farmers across the three countries in order to preserve crop quality. To achieve this, GRM is looking for the services of a highly experienced Post harvest technology Specialist to carry out an assessment of farmer’s knowledge gaps and requirements, and recommend appropriate measures to close the identified gaps. In particular to fully assess postharvest losses impacts, on household food security and effects on women’s empowerment at household level.
Tasks and Responsibilities
· Review the current postharvest systems used by farmers assessing their strengths, weaknesses and opportunities in all three countries.
· Review and recommend other projects for linkage purpose that are working on post-harvest techniques in each country.
· Redefine and recommend user friendly appropriate postharvest systems technologies for use by farmers including women farmers.
· Train SAMP 2 staff and farmers on post-harvest techniques.
· Produce a comprehensive assessment report of the study.
Expertise
· Post graduate qualification in post-harvest management
· 10 years’ experience in the design and implementation of post-harvest interventions
· Experience in training rural populations in post-harvest management
· Excellent communication skills for both written and oral presentation
